Deontay Wilder was born in 1985 and is an American pro heavyweight boxer. He was a late starter to boxing and only entered the sport aged 20. He earned the nickname the ‘The Bronze Bomber’ at the 2008 Olympics, having won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division. The heavyweight boxer is renowned for his unbelievable punching power. He has knocked out every opponent he has defeated. He is ranked as the world’s second-best active heavyweight by BoxRec (this is as of November 2020).
The boxing superstar graduated from High School and wanted to be an American Footballer and excelled as a wide receiver. It was only by chance he attended Shelton State Community College and focused on his career in boxing. He would go on to fight in the Skyy Boxing Gym in Alabama and eventually attend Olympic trials. He qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by beating Brazilian Rafael Lima.
He won the WBC Heavyweight title in 2015 and held it until 2020. He was the first American to win the title since 2004. During this time he made ten successful defences. He eventually lost the title to Tyson Fury at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. This was a rematch of the 2018 contest which was a draw. Victory for Tyson came through a technical knock out in the seventh round. During the contest, Wilder connected with 34 of his 141 punches (25%), compared to Fury’s 84 out of 267 punches (31%).
The boxing legend won the Ring Magazine Knockout of the Year award ain 2019. He is also a three-time winner of the Premier Boxing Champions Knockout of the Year Award.
