Known to fans as ‘The Iceman’, Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen is synonymous with Formula One success. Over the years he has revolutionised and remodelled the sport thanks to his unique racing style and many remarkable achievements. Despite his age he has no plans for retirement – renewing his contract with Sauber in 2018 following a departure from Ferrari.

Kimi first found success on the go-karting scene aged 10. Aged 15 he took part in his first race outside Finland in Monaco. The steering wheel broke – but he continued valiantly, waving the steering wheel in the air along the home straight. There was similar excitement during his second appearance at Monaco. Despite being thrown over a fence after a collision he continued driving until he ran out of road, lifted his kart back onto the track and continued to race – ultimately finishing third!

This dogged determination and impressive skill is a trademark characteristic associated with Raikkonen. He entered Formula One in 2001 with just 23 car races under his belt – bolstered by a 56% win rate. To date he has won one Formula One Drivers’ Championships in addition to 21 wins, 101 podiums and 18 pole positions. Raikkonen also holds a number of records – including the second highest record for the number of fastest laps and the fastest ever lap recorded in F1 history during the 2018 Italian Grand Prix. Coinciding with his time spent in F1 he has also participated and found success in World Rally Championships and NASCAR. In 2009 he was listed as the 2nd highest paid athlete in the world.

Raikkonen has a reputation as a bit of a character on the circuit – and is known for his dislike of giving interviews and speaking with the press. His nickname ‘Iceman’ has various meanings – the most obvious being the cold climate of his native Finland. However, it does also allude to the frosty persona he has cultivated amongst fellow drivers, team mates and the media. Of this perception, Kimi says: ‘I am not here to try and please people. I am here to do my best.’ He speaks four languages – Finnish, English, Italian and Swedish.
