Damon Hill is a retired Formula One racing driver. He started his racing career on the motorcycle circuit. Hill was also a labourer on a building site at the time to supplement his income. His father, who was also a racing driver, persuade Damon to venture on a racing car training programme. He was worried about the dangers associated with motorcycle racing. Hill experienced some success racing vans before moving onto racing cars.
In 1992 he joined the Williams Formula one team. Initially, his role was as a test driver. He made a great impact as a test driver that he was promoted to the racing team. Hill made his debut in 1992 at the Spanish Grand Prix. He won his first race at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 1993. During the 1996 season, the British legend won the Driver’s World Championship. This elevated his status on the F1 circuit with many fans asking for the Damon Hill autograph on trackside. Hill was very amenable and would often have signing sessions.
He had a successful season winning 8 races. Despite his strong performance, Williams dropped him. This opened up opportunities among other teams who were keen to sign him up and get the Damon Hill signature. It was ultimately the Arrows team who won the battle for his signature. He then moved onto the Jordan team and led the team to their first victory in a F1 Grand Prix. The Jordan team eventually dropped him in 1999 and Hill retired from the sport. Post-retirement he works as an F1 pundit and is a regular to for Sky Sports. He remains a key figure in the sport.
