Most commonly known as ‘Dortmund’ or BVB, Borussia Dortmund may not be a household name worldwide – but they’re one of the most successful clubs in German football history.
Dortmund FC was founded in 1909, named after the town it is situated in just north of the Rhine. Eight football players came together to create the club, which joined German top tier Bundesliga in 1963 – as one of the first sixteen clubs to play in the league. It was and still is part of a huge membership-based sports club, which boasts over 145,000 members. Deloitte’s annual Football Money League ranks Dortmund as the second biggest sports club in Germany and the 11th largest in the world.
Dortmund’s achievements over the years in domestic German football are numerous. They’ve won 8 German championships, 5 DFL Supercups and 4 DFB Pokals. In addition to consistent wins in Germany’s Bundesliga, Dortmund has also excelled in European football tournaments. When they clinched the Winner’s Cup in 1966 they became the very first German team to win a European title. Since then they’ve also won one UEFA Champion’s League, one UEFA Cup Winners Cup and one Intercontinental Cup.
Since 1974 Dortmund have played at their dedicated stadium, Westfalenstadion. They have a long-running rivalry with neighbours Schalke, based in nearby Ruhr. Clashes are known as ‘Revierderby’.
