Bundesliga heavyweights Fußballclub Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e. V (more commonly known as Schalke or FC Schalke 04, for short) have been part of the German football scene since 1904. The professional football club is also part of a wider multi-sports club based in Schalke, Gelsenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia. Collectively it’s the second largest sports club in Germany – and the fourth largest in the world.
Schalke was originally founded as Westfalia Schalke by a group of students. At the time many of the club’s players and supporters came from the surrounding coal mines in Gelsenkirchen. Because of this in 1877 the club picked up one of its famous nicknames, Die Knappen, derived from an old German word for ‘miners’. Their other nickname, ‘Die Konigsblauen’ (The Royal Blues) arose after they adopted their now-famous blue and white kit in 1924.
FC Schalke’s achievements over the years are well-documented. They have won 7 German championships, one DFL Supercup and 5 DFB Pokals. Their success has not gone unnoticed – in 2015 UEFA named Schalke the seventh best football team in Europe according to its UEFA Club Rankings.
Schalke 04 has a colourful fan culture and draws support from all over the world. Its members totalled 155,000 in 2018, with many concentrated in and around Germany and neighbouring countries such as Switzerland.
