Millwall Football Club are from Bermondsey, South East London. They were originally founded as Millwall Rovers in 1885 where they played in the Millwall area of the Isle of Dogs. They managed to retain their name despite not actually playing in Millwall since 1910. They currently play in the EFL Championship with the club crest of a lion, hence their nickname ‘The Lions’. Their home kit is a blue shirt and socks, complete with white shorts. Millwall play at The Den where they moved to in 1993. Their previous ground is now referred to as the Old Den.
Millwall have generated bad press over the years. Even their own fans famous song is ‘No one likes us, we don’t care’. They are associated with hooliganism and have even had a number of films been made, such is their notoriety. Millwall share a heated rivalry with neighbours West Ham United. They also share rivalries with Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic and Chelsea.
The club have spent a large part of their history between the second and third tiers of English football. They did have a short spell in the top flight between 1988 and 1980 with a best place finish of 10th in 1988-1989. Millwall reached the 2004 FA Cup Final, losing to Manchester United 3-0 in the final. With United having already qualified for Europe, via the Champions League, Millwall were handed a place in the UEFA Cup the following season. They were however knocked out in the first round 4-2 on aggregate by Ferencvaros, from Hungary.
Following a great deal of upheaval, in the 2000s, Millwall reached Wembley five times in 8 years.
