Watford is based in Hertfordshire and was founded in 1881. They joined the Football League in 1920, prior to which they were playing in the Southern League. They have played at a number of grounds throughout their history, including Vicarage Road where they moved to in 1920 and have stayed ever since.
Their most successful era occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. Under Graham Taylor’s guidance, they climbed from the Fourth Division to the First Division. They almost won the English Championship in 1983 but were pipped to the title by Liverpool. They came second which was still a marvellous achievement. They reached the 1984 FA Cup Final, losing to Everton. They also reached the 2019 FA Cup Final, losing this time to Manchester City.
Watford’s home kit is a mixture of gold and black. Previously it was blue and white up until 1960. Their nickname is the Hornets, previously it was The Brewers in reference to the Benskins Brewery, which owned the Freehold to Vicarage Road.
The Watford players run out onto the pitch to Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’. Elton John was club chairman of Watford from 1976 until 2002. He did however sell the club in 1990 but returned as chairman in 1997. He remains a life president.
