This is due to its origins as a church football team, where they were founded as St Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association. They took the name Southampton St. Mary’s in 1894 when they joined the Southern League. The Saints play in red and white stripes and black shorts.
Southampton joined the English Football League in 1920. They were one of the founding members of the Premier League in the season 1992-1993. They remained in the Premier League until 2005 when they relegated into the Championship where the stayed until 2012. They gained promotion in 2012 back into the Premier League.
Club honours include Football League runners up in 1983-1984, FA Cup winners in 1975-1976 and Football League Trophy in 2009-2010. They have been runners up in the FA Cup 3 times and in the League Cup twice. The spend eleven years in the premiership, and were runners up in the EFL Cup in 2017. Since then teh club has faired less well and in 2023 they slipped down into the Championship.
The club anthem is sung to the tune of When the Saints Go Marching In. Their arch-rivals are local south coast team Portsmouth. This is due to the close proximity between the clubs and the cities maritime histories. It is known as the South Coast Derby and is usually a hotly contested match.
