He was a key member of the 1966 England World Cup Winning Squad. He was instrumental in helping England win the trophy with his superior passing ability from midfield and his ability to score spectacular goals. Such was Charlton’s influence, he won the Ballon d’Or in 1966, following England’s victory. He has been part of the England squad at four World Cups, playing an active role in three of them (1962, 1966 and 1970)
Charlton played the vast majority of his career at Manchester United, notching up 758 appearances and 249 goals for the club. The appearance record was eventually beaten by Ryan Giggs in 2008. He made his debut for United in 1956 and survived the Munich air crash in 1958. He is the last surviving person of the tragedy. He was captain when Man United won the European Cup 1n 1968, scoring two goals in the final.
