Jamie Vardy is a great example of a footballer who has progressed through the ranks of non-league football to make it big. Vardy was released by Sheffield Wednesday at 16 so went on to play for Stocksbridge Park Steels. He impressed there so joined Halifax Town and then Fleetwood Town. He signed for City in 2012 and helped them win the Championship in 2014.
Vardy would be instrumental in driving Leicester City to the Premier League title in 2015-16. He won Premier League Player of the Season and Footballer of the Year, scoring in 11 consecutive league games that season. Vardy won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2020 and then earned an FA Cup Winner’s medal in 2021. He became the first player to have featured in every round the of the FA Cup.
