Luka Modric is the current captain of the Croatia national football team. He is recognised as the best Croatian footballer that has lived. Luka also plays for Spanish giants, Real Madrid. His main role is in central midfield but he is versatile, being just as strong in an attacking or defensive midfield role. Although quite small, Modric is an exceptional playmaker with acute vision. He has many strengths including dribbling, pace, passing, first touch and the ability to change a game in an instant. He has been likened to an orchestra conductor such his ability to influence a game.
His childhood was influenced by the Croatian War of Independence with much of his family being displaced. He played for his hometown’s youth team before being signed by Dinamo Zagreb aged 16. After a couple of loan spells he made his full senion debut for Zagreb in 2005. Zagreb went on to win three league titles and cup doubles. Modric won the Prva HNL Player of the Year in 2007.
His solid performances for Zagreb put Modric in the spotlight across Europe. In 2008 Modric signed for English side, Tottenham Hotspur for a record club fee of £16.5 million. He remained at Spurs between 2008 and 2012 before eventually moving to Real Madrid in 2102. Modric is now playing his 10th season for Los Blancos. He was won multiple honours in Spain including four UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga’s, three FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and domestic trophies.
