Football (or ‘futbol’) is famously popular in Mexico. The two-time World Cup hosts have plenty of national and international titles under their belt – and although the country has never won the world cup with its national first team, its U-17s team has topped the leaderboard twice.

Football has been played professionally in Mexico since the early 1900s – it is thought to have been introduced to locals by Cornish miners. The first club was named C.F Pachuca – since then footballing culture in Mexico has quickly expanded with hundreds of clubs competing across the country’s various league divisions. Now the top men’s clubs include Guadalajara, Toluca and Cruz Azul competing in the Liga MX, Ascenco MC and Liga Premier. The impressive Estadio Azteca in Santa Ursula, Mexico City is home to its national team nicknamed ‘El Tri’ – a nod to the three colours of the nation’s flag. They’ve qualified for the World Cup an incredible fourteen times, but as of yet they have been defeated at the Quarter Finals before tasting victory. Mexico’s national team have also participated in the Copa America every year since 1993.

Women’s football is also popular in Mexico, with a substantial number nationwide following the sport. The 2017-2018 Liga MX Femenil season set a precedent and new world records for attendance at a women’s professional football match.
