Reading Football Club are based in Berkshire. They currently play in the EFL Championship. Reading are one of the oldest clubs in England having been established in 1871. Although they are one of the oldest clubs in the country, they didn’t actually start playing in the English Football League until after the First World War, in 1920. The club plays in blue and white and currently features sponsoring by Casumo.
Due to the town’s association with biscuit production, they were known as The Biscuitman. Reading is also associated with the Royal Family, therefore it’s called the Royal County of Berkshire. This is why the team are referred to as The Royals. Reading played their home games at Elm Park between 1896 and 1998. They then moved to the newly built Madejski Stadium which was named after the chairman at the time, Sir John Madejski.
Reading holds a number of records including the most number of successive league wins at the start of a campaign. This was during the 1985-1986 season in the Third Division. They have also amassed the most points in a league season by a professional team. This was 106 points in the 2005-2006 Championship season. The following season they finished an impressive 8th in the Premier League. This was made even more impressive due to the fact this was their first season in the top flight of English football.
They almost reached the final of the 2014-2015 FA Cup Final but were knocked out in the semi-final. They came close the following season too, reaching the quarter-finals. Their main rival up until 1992 was Aldershot until they went out of business. This was due to the proximity between the two clubs. There is a rivalry with the newly formed Aldershot Town, although they are yet to play a competitive game. Other rivals include Oxford United, Swindon Town, Bournemouth, Brentford, Wycombe Wanderers and Brighton.
