The club was formed as Morton Football Club in 1874. This make it one of the oldest Scottish professional football clubs. The club was renamed Greenock Morton Football Club in 1994. This was done to recognise the fact the club is based on Greenock.

Morton has not been in the Scottish Premier League since 1988. It holds a slightly bizarre record of having the most promotions to the Scottish Premier League, in addition to the most relegations. They have been promoted ten times to the league, and been relegated 10 times from the league. Their highest finish was in 1917 when they came 2nd to eventual winners Celtic. Morton won their first and only major honour five years later in 1922. They won the Scottish Cup.

Morton currently plays in the Scottish Championship and play their home games at Cappielow Park. Their home kit is blue and white shirt, with white shorts and blue socks. The current manager is Gus MacPherson.
