Known as one of the Netherlands’ ‘Big Three’ football clubs, PSV Eindhoven has dominated the Dutch top division for over 100 years.
PSV has an interesting story behind its success. It was originally set up as a team for Philips employees in 1913, then known as Philips Elftal. In 1916 the club officially changed its name to Philips Sport Vereniging (PSV), and the rest, as they say, is history! The club still plays on the site today at the Philips Stadion, its present-day stadium.
Achievements over the years are numerous and impressive. In their native Netherlands the team has won the Eredivisie 24 times, the KNVB Cup 9 times and the Johan Cruyff Shield 10 times. On the European stage PSV has enjoyed similarly spectacular success – with one Champions League title and one Europa League win to the club’s name.
PSV FC is dedicated to developing and cultivating new talent. It has served as a stepping stone for some of the world’s best-known and most successful Dutch players, including Ruud Gullit, Arjen Robben, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Phillip Cocu.
The club also has a long-running rivalry with fellow ‘Big Three’ Dutch giant Ajax. Historical differences fuel the conflict, as PSV FC is situated in Noord-Brabant, traditionally a more rural, poorer area compared with metropolitan, cosmopolitan Amsterdam where Ajax hail from. This local heritage has given rise to one of PSV’s most prominent nicknames ‘Boeren’ or ‘Peasants’.
