AFC Bournemouth are based in Dorset, more specifically Kings Park in Boscombe.  They have recently been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.  They were in the Premier League from 2016 to 2020.  Bournemouth are nicknamed ‘The Cherries’ and play in red and black striped shirts, black shorts and socks.  The team’s colours were based on the Italian giants AC Milan.

Bournemouth have played their home games at Dean Court and have been doing since 1910.  They were formed in 1899 as Boscombe St John’s Institute and changed their name to AFC Bournemouth in 1971.  The club has spent most of their history flicking between the third and fourth English divisions.  Their main honours include winning the Associate Members’ Cup, the Football League 3rd Division South Cup, plus all winning the English second and third divisions.

Eddie Howe helped Bournemouth rise up the divisions and reach the Premier League for the first time in 2015-2016.  They built up a solid reputation of playing good football during their time in the Premier League.  This is in some contrast to 2008-2009 when the club were forced into administration and were penalised with a ten-point deduction.  They had debts of £4 million and almost went out of business.

The last few years have seen Bournemouth’s meteoric rise to the top of English football. The club won the League One title in 2009, the Championship title in 2015, and finally, the Premier League in 2015, earning promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history.

Bournemouth’s success was built on a foundation of attacking football, a strong team spirit, and astute management. The club was led by managers like Lee Bradbury, Eddie Howe, and Jason Tindall.

Recent Achievements and Challenges

In the Premier League, Bournemouth enjoyed a period of stability, consistently avoiding relegation and showcasing their ability to compete against top-flight teams. The club also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2014 and 2018.

However, in 2020, Bournemouth suffered relegation back to the Championship after a difficult season. They bounced back in 2022 as Championship runners-up, this time under the management of Scott Parker. Andoni Iraola was appointed head coach in June 2023 from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano.
