Heart of Midlothian Football Club are better known as Hearts. They are from the Gorgie area in Edinburgh and play in the Scottish Premiership. They were founded in 1874 by members of a local dancing club. The club was called the Heart of Midlothian Quadrile Assembly. The name was influenced by the Walter Scott novel ‘The Heart of Midlothian’. The club’s emblem is based on the mosaic on the city’s Royal Mile.
The team’s main colours are maroon and white and they play their home matches a Tynecastle Park. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 following the recent redevelopment in 2017. Heart’s average attendance is close to capacity being around 17,000 to 18,000. Big games against the Old Firm teams and Hibernian often result in sold-out games.
Hearts main rivals are Hibs who are also based on Edinburgh. It’s one of the worlds oldest footballing rivalries and is known as the Edinburgh Derby
Hearts experienced a great deal of success in the late 19th century. They won the Scottish Football League in 1895 and 1896. Added to this, they won four Scottish Cups between 1891 and 1906. They experienced further success in the late 1950s winning the league in 1957-58 and 1959-1960. They have been runners up 14 times.
They have won the Scottish Cup 8 times, most recently in 2011-2012. Finally, they have won the Scottish League Cup 4 times.
