Lee Westwood OBE (‘Westy’ to friends and fans) is one of the world’s most celebrated golfing stars – and a great source of pride for the English golfing community. He is one of only a handful of professional golfers to have won tournaments on five different continents.
Born in Worksop, Westwood started playing golf at the age of 13 with a half set of clubs bought for him by his grandparents. His father took up the game at the same time to help to encourage the young Westwood – who also loved sports at school, playing rugby, cricket and football in addition to golf. Although he had come relatively late in life to golf compared with other champions, he quickly started to show natural talent. Within just two years he was the junior champion of Nottinghamshire, winning his very first tournament in 1990. By 1993 he had turned professional.
Within three years Westwood had won his first professional tournament, followed by another win at the Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters in Japan. This was just the start of his phenomenal success.
To date, he has won 23 events on the European Tour – named Player of the Year during the 1998, 2000 and 2009 seasons. Although he has never managed to clinch a major championship victory he is widely regarded as one of the best golfers around – and has experienced many near-misses and runner-up positions in the PGA, US Open and Masters Tournaments over the years.
