Rory McIlroy was born in 1989 and was born in Holywood, Northern Ireland.  He is a professional golfer and a member of both the European and PGA Golf Tours.   McIlroy started playing golf at an early age and was coached by his father, Gerry McIlroy was himself played at a scratch handicap.  Rory became the youngest member of Holywood Golf Club aged just seven.

McIlroy is ranked number one in the Official World Golf Ranking.  He has spent over 100 weeks of his career ranked No1 in the World.  He has won four majors and is only one of four players to have won 3 majors before the age of 25.  His first major was the US Open in 2011, followed by the PGA Championship in 2012, Open Championship in 2014 and the PGA Championship the same year.  He also a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

McIlroy was also a successful amateur and was ranked No1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in 2007, aged just 17 years old.  He turned pro later that year and became a key player on the European Tour.  His first win came two years later in 2009 on the European Tour and 2010 on the PGA Tour.  McIlroy became the youngest player to reach $10 million in career earning on the European tour, aged just 22.  A year later in 2012, he received the same accolade on the PGA Tour.

He has played for Ireland as both an amateur and professional.  Rory also represented Europe and Great Britain as a professional.  He has played for Europe at the Ryder Cup against America five times, winning four of these Ryder Cups.  McIlroy also played for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004, again he was on the winning team.
