Shane Lowry is a professional golfer who currently plays on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour. The golfing superstar was born in County Westmeath in Ireland. He is the son of Brendan Lowry who also played golf professionally. Shane Lowry’s biggest success to date is winning the Open Championship in 2019. It was the 148th Open Championship played at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. It was Lowry’s first major title. He beat Tommy Fleetwood by six shots. It was a huge achievement for Lowry, only being ranked 33rd going into the tournament.
Lowry had a successful amateur career winning the Irish Open in 2009. He also played alongside McIlroy to win the European Amateur Team Championship in 2007. Lowry would also go on to win the same tournament the following year. Other notable amateur wins include the West of Ireland Championship in 2008 and Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup in 2009.
