Record-breaking, internationally renowned Olympic gold medallist sprinter Usain Bolt has turned the world of athletics upside down – unsurprisingly he is widely considered to be the greatest sprinter of all time.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Bolt discovered a love for sport at a very early age. As a child he’d play football and cricket in the street with his brother, and ‘never really thought of anything other than sports.’ His sprinting talent was quickly discovered at primary school – and by age 12 he was the school’s faster runner over 100 metres.

In high school, the talent was nurtured further – and he soon rose to prominence in sprinting, first at the 2002 World Junior Championships at home in Kingston. He was aged just 15 – but at 6 foot 5 inches, he already towered over his peers. Two years later he began his professional career in earnest – the rest, as they say, is history.

Although Bolt retired in 2017, he still holds the world record titles for the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4×100 metres relay. He has nine Olympic gold medals under his belt, initially shooting to fame after his impressive haul at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he smashed a double sprint victory in record times. He is the only sprinter to win Olympic 100 and 200 metre titles at three consecutive Olympics. He has broken his own 200 metres world record twice.

Bolt is loved worldwide for his astounding achievements and his vivacious personality. His nickname (and accompanying pose) ‘Lightning Bolt’ as earned him international notoriety and several lucrative sponsorship deals. He’s won awards such as BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, Track and Field Athlete of the Year and IAAF World Athlete of the Year to name but a few. His other interests include football, dancing and music.
