Argentina played its first rugby match in 1910 against a team from the British Isles (later to be named the British Lions). Argentina’s national sport is football, however the popularity of rugby union continues to increase across the country. They play in a number of stadiums, but play most of their games at the Jose Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires. It is also home to Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield
They are nicknamed Los Pumas (the Pumas) and play in sky blue and white jerseys, similar to that worn by the national football team. They are currently ranked 11th in the world and are the strongest rugby union team in the Americas. Due to their location, they had no regular competition to play in until 2014. There is the Six Nations in the Northern Hemisphere and the Tri-Nations in the Southern Hemisphere, so the Argentinians quite rightly felt left out.
Following a meeting in Buenos Aires in 2011 a new tournament called the Rugby Championship was created. It was an updated version of the Tri-Nations which included New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. New Zealand continues to dominate the tournament, as they did the Tri-Nations
Argentina came an impressive Fourth Place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup and have reached the Quarter-Finals twice, in 2011 and 1999. They beat the All Blacks for the first time in 2020, and after beating them again in 2022 have now recorded a win against every major international team .
