Rugby’s popularity as a sport really gathered pace in France in the early 1900s. At this time France won the gold medal at the Paris Summer Olympics, founding the Five Nations competition shortly after (a tournament which would eventually become the Six Nations).
The national team’s nickname ‘Les bleus’ or ‘The Blues’ refers to their royal blue kit, which they are well-known for. They are also renowned for their unique style of play. Nicknamed ‘the French flair’, it involves an unusual combination of tough, rugged physicality and graceful panache. Since the late 1960s France has retained its status as one of the top three teams in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also cited as a top-tier nation in World Rugby. Each year they participate in the Six Nations Championship. The team is widely feared by fellow European teams, regularly excelling during European Rugby Champions Cup games.
France has never actually won the Rugby World Cup – but they regularly feature as finalists and have been semi-finalists in every single tournament up to 1987, but have failed more recently only reaching the quarter finals in the last three tournaments, including 2023 when it was held in France.
As a nation the French are keen to develop fresh talent. Their £46 million investment in the National Rugby Centre (known as CNR) is a remarkable facility dedicated to the development of the sport. Spanning 49 acres, it boasts five rugby pitches, a state-of-the-art gym, medical facilities, media centre and living quarters for fledgling rugby stars.
