Italy has played International Rugby since 1929. They are known as gli Azzurri (the Blues). The Italians play in Savoy Blue which is the main colour of Italy’s national teams, including the Italian Football team. It was the traditional colour of the House of Savoy who reigned over Italy from 1860 until 1946.
The Italian rugby team were invited to join the Five Nations Championship in 2000, making it the Six Nations Championship, competing alongside England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and France. They won their first competitive match in the Six Nations, however things went downhill from there and they haven’t won many matches since, in fact they lost all their matches in the 2017-21 Six Nations tournaments, a run of 32 games. They have been awarded the Wooden Spoon 14 times, for coming last! They did win the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy in 2013 by defeating France.
The Italian team is ranked 12th in the World and have competed at every World Cup since the tournament started in 1987 but never getting beyond teh pool stage. They are considered to be one of the middle team, with an average performance of winning two matches and losing two matches.
The Italians play their home matches at the Stadio Olimpico, also home to the Roma Football Team. They did previous play at the Stadio Flamino in Rome which was intended to be expanded and renovated by 2014, although it was never completed. This has worked in the Italians favour where they continue to draw large crowds in excess of 70,000 for each match.
