Siyamthanda Kolisi, or Siya Kolisi as he is more commonly known, is the current captain of the South African national rugby team. He led the Springboks to victory in the Rugby World Cup Final in 2019 against England. His main position is flanker. Kolisi plays for South African club Sharks who are based in Durban. The Sharks participate in the Currie Cup.

Kolisi spent his childhood in Ibhayi, which is a township located close to Port Elizabeth. He made an early impression on scouts and was given a scholarship at Grey Junior, close to his family home. From there he was offered a rugby scholarship at Grey High School. This is a prestigious school where other international sports stars have attended. Siya was a regular in the rugby first team and played for Eastern Province Kings youth team. His exceptional performances earned him a place in the South African national under-18 team. He played at this level for two successive years. Kolisi went on to play for the under-20 South Africa side and competed in the IRB Junior World Championships in 2010 and 2011.

Siya Kolisi went on to make his full international debut for the Springboks in 2013 against Scotland. He came on as substitute in the 5th minute and helped the South Africa team to a 30-17 victory. Such was his influence on the game, he was named Man of the Match. He played two matches in the 2015 Rugby World Cup against Japan and Samoa.

Kolisi’s proudest moment in a Springbok shirt came in 2019. He led his country to a World Cup victory in Yokohama, Japan. He captained South Africa in their victory against England in the final, winning 32-12.
