Premiership rugby union giants Leicester Tigers are surely a force to be reckoned with. Founded over 130 years ago in 1880, they have occupied the Welford Road Stadium in the south of the city since 1892.
Their nickname ‘the Tigers’ has been around even longer – and as it suggests the club are renowned for their determination, fierce attacking play and consistent achievement over the years. Speed, agility and ability have made them a formidable force to be reckoned with both in domestic and European competitions.
Throughout their early years Leicester Tigers went through a series of successful periods and restructures – all of which set them up for a magnificent presence once they turned fully professional in the 1990s. Between 1993 and 2002 Leicester secured an incredible nine trophies in ten years – which included two back-to-back European Championship wins. That’s not all – the club’s silverware collection is sizeable, including eight Anglo-Welsh Cups, a Premiership Rugby Title (2013) and two Heineken Cups. Overall they have won twenty major titles. Tigers have qualified to play in every single season of the European Champions Cup (which was subsequently replaced by the Heineken Cup) – making them the only English side to do so. They are also one of just four teams to have avoided relegation from the top division throughout their active years.
Three Leicester players were selected for the prestigious honour of representing England at the 2003 Rugby World Cup – which they, of course, went on to win.
