Glasgow Warriors is one of two professional rugby union sides from Scotland, the other being Edinburgh Rugby. Both teams play in the PRO-14 Championship. The PRO-14 is an rugby union tournament that is played each year involving professional sides from Ireland, Italy, South Africa, Wales and Scotland. The most successful teams go on to compete in the European Rugby Champions Cup, formerly known as the Heineken Cup in 2014.
Glasgow Warriors are a follow-on from the amateur Glasgow District side which was formed in 1872. The Warriors were created in 1996 to enable them to compete in the Heineken Cup. The SRU didn’t believe rugby sides from Scotland were good enough to compete against other teams in France or England.
The Glasgow team have historically been known as nomads and have changed where they play their home games a number of times. For the majority of the time, Glasgow Warriors have played at Hughenden Stadium, Scotstoun Stadium or Firhill Stadium. Their current home is Scotstoun Stadium which featured rugby union games going back to the early 1900s. There are numerous additional moves, to many to mention here, which range from Stranraer to Inverness, to Edinburgh to Aberdeen, and of course Glasgow.
They have thus acquired fans across the country and their fans are known as the Warrior Nation. Glasgow have a loyal away following and thousands can travel to away games. Consequently, Saracens saw their largest ever attendance when 6,000 Warrior Nation fans travelled to Allianz Park in London in the 2016-2017 season. Glasgow lost to Saracens in the Quarter-Final of the European Challenge Cup.
