Every four years the world’s top rugby teams come together to compete for the hallowed international trophy. The rugby union men’s tournament awards the Webb Ellis trophy which is named after English Anglican clergyman and purportedly, the inventor of rugby while he was a pupil at the public school of the same name.
The 9th Rugby World Cup in 2019, held in Japan on 20 September to 2 November, is the first one to be held in Asia. The first event held in 1987 did not require any of the teams to qualify. This has now changed and now twelve of the 20 available places are awarded automatically, based on their performance in the preceding tournament.
