The Six Nations Championships have evolved over time.  The origins date back to the creation of the Calcutta Cup in 1879 when England and Scotland became the first international teams to play against each other.  As rugby became more popular across Britain, other countries wanted to be involved. This led to the creation of the Home Nations Championship in 1883 which included England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

After the second world war, France were invited to join the tournament and it was renamed The Five Nations.  It stayed this way for over 50 years until the turn of the century when Italy were added in 2000.  The name again changed to the Six Nations where it remains the same to the present day.  Although Italy won their first game, they have lost the vast majority of games since.

There are a number of different trophies that are contested during the championship including The Grand Slam, The Calcutta Cup, The Triple Crown Trophy, Millenium Trophy and the one nobody wants to win – The Wooden Spoon, for coming last.

Games are played at some of the best Rugby Union stadia in the World.  England play at Twickenham which is the largest Rugby Union stadium in the world, with an impressive capacity of 82,000.
