Tomas Berdych was born in the Czech Republic in 1985.  He gained notoriety as a professional tennis player.  Berdych started playing tennis at the tender age of five years old.  He played in his hometown of Valasske Mezirici.  By the time he was 8 years old, he got to the final of the top young boys of Czech Republic.  He went on to win the tournament.  Berdych’s biggest career win was in France in the Paris Masters.  He won the tournament in 2005, despite being unseeded.

Czech Republic is renowned for its cold and harsh winters.  As a result he played most of his tennis indoors.  Berdych explains this is the main reason his preference is to play on hardcourt surfaces, especially indoor tournaments.  He considers his strengths to be his hard serve and forehand.

His biggest achievement was reaching the final of the Wimbledon Championship in 2010.  On the way to the final he caused two huge upsets beating Roger Federer and then Novak Djokovic.  Rafael Nadel went on to win the tournament.  Berdych went on to reach the 2010 French Open semi-final, beating Andy Murray on the way.

He has reached the semi-final in three other grand slam tournaments.  In 2012 he reached the US Open semi-final beating the world No1 Roger Federer in the quarter finals.  He lost to Andy Murray who went on to win the US Open that year.  Berdych also reached the 2014 Australia Open semi-finals, losing to eventual winner Stanislas Wawrinka.

He is one of only three players to defeat the Big Four tennis players in major events.  Berdych is a fan of Arsenal and also a big fan of the Irish band U2.  He also likes ice hockey and follows the Detroit Red Wings.  He married model Ester Satorova in July 2015.
