Boris Becker is a retired professional tennis player. His nicknames included ‘Boom Boom’, ‘Der Bomber’ and ‘Baron von Slam’, such was the power of his fast and accurate serve. He would often follow up his serve with a spring to the net to complete his serve and volley strategy. He was famous for his athleticism at the net which made him a fan-favourite. His other strengths included his ability to return even the best of serves, and an incredibly powerful forearm.
He won the first of his six major singles titles aged just 17. The six major Grand Slam singles titles included three Wimbledon titles, two Australian Opens wins and a US Open victory. Added to this he won a doubles Olympic gold medal, three year-end championships and 13 Masters Series titles.
Becker turned pro in 1984 winning his first pro doubles title the same year. The German won his first singles title at the Queen’s Club in 1985 which gave him important experience playing on grass. This would help him when he went on to win the men’s Wimbledon singles title two weeks later. He was the first player unseeded to win Wimbledon. Becker was also the youngest ever male to win a Grand Slam singles title, aged 17 years and 227 days. Michael Chang would go on to break this record four years later, aged 17 years and 100 days. The tennis legend would go on to defend his Wimbledon title the following year.
Becker had achieved an incredible amount within tennis at an early age. He retired in 2012 and was declared bankrupt five years later. He has gone on to achieve a number of things and is notable for being a Commentator at BBC Wimbledon and numerous other TV appearances. He is also on the advisory board at Bayern Munich, a patron of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and is heavily involved in poker.
